WEEKLY REPORT III

Command of knowledge in the subject matter (English) to be taught implies that EFL teachers should be able to translate the curriculum & syllabus
-          Curriculum          =   School  level curriculum
-          English syllabus  =  Standards of contents
                                      Standards of graduate competencies

Control of technical skills of teaching to facilitate students learning.
To be effective teaching, an EFL teacher is, like other subject teachers required to possess a repertoire of teaching skills.
-          Instructional planning skills
-          Lesson presentation skills
-          Questioning skills
-          Interpersonal & transactional communication skills
-          Closing teaching section skills
-          Evaluating skills
-          Skills of using language teaching media
Instructional planning skills should include
-          Statements of the goals
-          Statement of the objectives
-          List of needed material
-          Outline of the activities & description
-          Plan for reinforcement
-          Procedure and for record keeping

Changes/purposes of the implemented curriculum
Purposed of goals statement
-          Provide a clear definition
-          Provide guideline to teachers
-          Help provide a focus for instruction
-          Describe important & realizable changes of learning
Goal statements are generally divided from information gathered during a need analysis and reflect the ideology of the curriculum and show how the curriculum will seek to realize it.

Objectives
Objectives are sometimes referred to as instructional objectives/teaching objectives/instructional which refer to a more specific & concrete description of purposes.

Characteristics of the objectives
-          Describe what goals and seek to achieve in terms of smaller units of learning
-          Provide a basis for organization of teaching activities
-          Describe learning in terms of observable behavior/performance
Characteristics of statement of objectives
-          Describe a learning outcome
-          Should be consistent with the curriculum goals
-          Should be precise and feasible

Lesson presentation skills
-          put a students into receptive frame (hit the iron while it is hot)and facilitate my physic, mental or emotional
-          hook the attention of the students to the course goal
-          introduce the lesson by the providing the information needed for students to gain the knowledge (form, function & meaning)
-          shows students examples: use labeling, categorizing, comparing, contrast, and ect. For clarification and explanation

4. Learning is a continual, lifelong, and reinforcement process
5. Learning is a perceiving, selecting, intaking, and storing information process
6. Learning is an objective-oriental process

The learning assimilation facility hypothesis states that human being learn a language using their capacity for symbolic thought and their ability to assimilate a complex system of thought
Language and Language Learning Viewed from Language Teaching Method
Theory of language = Language is a set of structure that related with situation
Theory of learning = memorization and habit formation

Learning and Foreign language learning Viewed from Human Behavior in Terms of Learners Psychological Development
Children : They are curious and motivating so that they need to be involved in something physically active. Their span of attention of concentration-their willingness to stay rooted in one activity is short so that they need frequent changes simulating activities to simulate their curiosity; they are seeking for teacher approval so that they need to be appreciated by the teacher; and they usually respond well to activities that center on heir lives and experiences so that explaining grammar and rules will be ineffective the younger the learners are.
Adolescent : They have brittle personality so that they need peer approval; they have emotional barrier and fossilized pronunciation as the influence of their mother tongue so that they always avoid making mistakes, they need right challenges; and building up their own identity so that they need a patron.
Adults : They have instrumental extrinsic motivation in the sense that they have a determined objective to active so that they are self motivated; they also have emotional barrier to fossilized pronunciation as the influence of their mother tongue.

Command of Knowledge in the Subject Matter
- An EFL teacher is required to have good command of knowledge in English. He should know about the language well. (there must have linguistics competence) and became the good language us model of his students.
- Linguistics competence consist of phonological, morphological, lexical, syntactical, and discourse competence
- Sociolinguistics competences consist of the ability to produce and recognize socially appropriate language within a given socio-cultural context.

English in the world Today: Different context for Teaching

English as first language/native English/mother tongue (EMT/L1): United Kingdom, United States of America, Australia, Canada, South Africa.

English as Second language (ESL/L2): Malaysia (but now Malaysia use English as foreign language.

English as Foreign language (EFL):
Academic Rasionalism.
Develop our country: mastering the technology and to mastering technology, we should learn language. There are 3 status/language & policy in indonesia. They are
1. National Language
2. Local Language
3. Foreign language
English as an International language (EIL):
People study English because they want to use English to talk they want to communicate with other people around the world.

English for Speaker/Other language:
Different people with different language. Teach people that use different language to communicate.




There are 4 factors of the perennial thruths of teaching-learning process. They are, Teacher, Students, Material, and context of time & Place. There will be no teaching-learning process if one of them is absent.
Focus on the Teacher
The EFL Teacher
- Formal EFL teaching qualification
An EFL teacher is the one who is employed in an official capacity for the purpose of guiding & directing the learning experiences of pupils/students in English in an educational institution. Whether public/private. In regard to having completed a professional curriculum in a teacher education institution & whose training in teaching English has been recognized by the award of an appropriate
- The areas of TEFL teacher competence
Command of theoritical knowledge about language acquistion, language learning & human behavior.
Command of knowledge in the subject matter to be taught
Control of technical skills of teaching to facilitate students learning
Display of positive attitudes that foster learning & genuine human relationship
Control of intra-&intercultural awareness

- The roles he/she should play in the classroom
- The personality or characters he should have
